  1. […] little @BrendaVanLengen and @MechelleV doing their post-Olympic review, the WNBA & NCAA volleyball podcast […]

  2. During the Olympics, a badminton team got sent off for, essentially, what Phoenix is doing. It’s not a complicated situation: the Phoenix Mercury, a professional women’s basketball organization, is tanking their season and they’re being terribly brazen about it. The reluctance to call this what it clearly is…is a real disservice to your listeners.

With respect to the fan reaction…what I find interesting is that Phoenix, Washington and Tulsa fans all agree on what’s happening. I haven’t seen anyone–outside the media, ironically–who’s reluctant to admit that the Mercury are intentionally tanking their season; instead, the disagreement seems to be about whether or not that breech of professional ethics is something that ought to provoke outrage and/or warrant punishment. That’s the disagreement that fans of the WNBA need dispassionate sports journalists (or, heaven forbid, the league’s leadership) to negotiate…and thus far, no one seems willing to do so.
